Moldavite is not a mineral that grew in the earth. About 15 million years
ago a meteorite struck what is now southern Germany, and the impact threw molten terrestrial
rock into the upper atmosphere. It cooled as it fell and landed across a narrow strewn field in
Bohemia and Moravia. That is the whole supply. There is no second deposit, the Czech fields are
close to worked out, and nothing new is being made.
What makes a hedgehog different. After the glass landed it spent millions of
years in acidic sediment, and the acid ate into the surface. On most pieces that produces gentle
pitting. On a rare few it produces this – a dense field of sharp ridges, spines and hollows across
the whole stone, deep enough to catch light from every angle. Collectors call them hedgehogs, and
they command a substantial premium over smooth material of the same weight, because you cannot
make one on purpose and you cannot find them to order.
Hold it to a window: the thin edges glow a translucent forest green and the internal flow
structure, frozen mid-pour, becomes visible through the body of the glass.
- Shipped directly from our US fulfilment centre, tracked.
- The geologist we work with is a member of the IMCA (International Meteorite Collectors Association).
- We guarantee this moldavite is authentic, real and genuine. Returns accepted in any case of hesitation.
How do I know this is real moldavite? Look for the small bubbles – round or
elongated – combined with the striation lines running through the glass. Both are present in
natural moldavite and are extremely difficult to fake. Hold the piece up to the light and you
will see them. Cast glass also melts at a far lower temperature than genuine moldavite.
Does it come with a certificate? Yes. Every piece ships with its own
numbered BuyMoldavite Certificate of Authenticity recording the stone type, weight and
locality. We have worked with the same Czech mine for over 20 years.
